Arizona State University's Center for Advancing Interprofessional Practice, Education and Research (CAIPER) team was recognized by the National Academies of Practice (NAP) for their innovative work in advancing health professions training and education through eLearning.

The CAIPER team accepted the National Academies of Practice Creativity in Practice and Education Award in Washington DC on April 1, 2023 at this year’s annual NAP forum focused on “Interprofessional Collaboration: Innovation and Inclusivity in Practice, Advocacy, and Scholarship.”

This award marks the second time in eight months that the team at CAIPER has been nationally recognized for their work and impact in team-based healthcare. In August 2022, the CAIPER team received the Nexus Summit George E. Thibault, MD Nexus Award – the highest honor awarded by the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education.

The NAP Winners Circle

The CAIPER team joins an impressive list of past NAP award winners including, Gail Jensen, Barbara Maxwell, Thomas Jefferson University, and Dr. Anthony Fauci.

In awarding the CAIPER team for their advancement of eLearning in healthcare, incoming NAP President and Associate Vice Chancellor for Interprofessional Practice and Education at The Ohio State University, Andrea Pfeifle, shared:

"CAIPER has made enduring contributions to interprofessional practice and education through its eLearning trainings and the National Academies of Practice is proud to affirm this by conferring CAIPER the Creativity in Practice & Education Award at its recent forum in Washington, DC. I am so glad members of the CAIPER team were able to be there in person to accept the award.

Increasingly, interprofessional eLearning programs have become important over time as they bring multiple diverse professions and team members together around topics like wellness, humility, empathy, and health equity; thusly improving the quality of health and healthcare and advancing well-being across our communities."

CAIPER’s Work in Advancing eLearning

Through extensive research efforts, CAIPER advances the science of interprofessionalism and team-based care, then translates that science into training and education for health and social care professionals, faculty, students, and industry leaders. CAIPER has been developing training and education resources for over 10 years. To date, more than 40k certificates have been issued to health professions learners around the world for completing CAIPER eLearning programs.

Innovation has always been a key driver behind the development of CAIPER eLearning programs. From fully interactive digital magazines to animated and gamified courses, CAIPER strives to develop engaging trainings that succinctly meet the needs of health professionals and students.

Most recently, CAIPER launched I-TEAM By Design™: Interprofessional Training in Empathy, Affect and Mindfulness, which is in use by several organizations for faculty and student training, including Johns Hopkins Medicine and Creighton University.

CAIPER Director and Associate Professor Barret Michalec, said:

"To be consistently recognized by such prestigious interprofessional organizations as the leaders in the field is truly an honor.  These awards showcase our knowledge of not only the target audience of learners and the gaps in the market, but also best-practices in design and implementation.  With the additions of the CAIPER Learning Solutions Consulting and the BhEAT Lab we are continuing to expand our impact and reach – we’re just getting started."

What’s Next

With two national awards for their impactful work in team-based healthcare, the team at CAIPER is not slowing down. Over the next year, CAIPER will launch two new fully accredited courses, as well as add an accreditation to an existing training.

The Center recently launched their Learning Solutions Consulting to support other institutions and organizations in seamlessly integrated interprofessional training and education into their existing programs.

The newly launched BhEAT Lab highlights CAIPER’s research initiatives in fields of health professions education and healthcare delivery, as well as opportunities to partner with CAIPER through the Affiliate Program.
