Interprofessional Leadership, Environments and Outcomes

 

There is a growing emphasis on the idea of joy in the workplace and a push to add a 4th Aim for Healthcare’s Triple Aim focused on positive practice environments for clinicians. It is easy to understand why this is so important.  We have 30+ years worth of data that has identified positive practice environments for clinicians are associated with better outcomes for patients, the workforce and organizations.

I have become a champion of interprofessional education (IPE), which has afforded me the opportunity to participate in several efforts to offer face-to-face IPE activities for our students at ASU and beyond. Unfortunately, none these projects were feasible for my own online RN-BSN nursing students to attend.

From Medicine to Journalism: Interprofessional Teamwork at the SHOW Student-Run Clinic

Student Health Outreach for Wellness (SHOW) is a tri-university, student-run clinic where interprofessional teams of students work together to provide health care and education to homeless individuals in the Phoenix, Arizona area. CAIPER has collaborated with SHOW on a variety of initiatives and provided support for the design and evaluation of SHOW’s teamwork model.

The American health system is transitioning from an illness care model to a patient centered/community-based prevention and wellness system. This care transformation is the direct result of stressors placed on an overburdened system including an aging and sicker population, lack of preventative care, millions of uninsured individuals, shortage of primary care providers, and rising health care costs.

From I to We: The Magic of Teams

I was asked to speak at the first advanced IPEC Institute in October this year. Academic-Practice teams come to IPEC workshops from all over the US to work on growing their interprofessional programs. IPEC is the Interprofessional Education Collaborative that brought us the national interprofessional competencies.  It is now made up of 19 accreditation organizations across many different health professions programs.

In April 2018, Arizona is launching its first ever conference dedicated to interprofessional healthcare practice and education. Hosted by the Arizona Nexus, the two-day conference on April 20-21, brings together practitioners, administrators, educators, researchers and students with the shared goal of creating a healthier Arizona through collaboration and teamwork.

Designing Interprofessional Education for Providers: Learning From, With and About Primary Care Teams

About a year ago, we decided to try our hand at preparing educational materials that would help primary care providers work more effectively with the complex and vulnerable populations they typically serve. Up to that point, most of our Center’s efforts were focused on developing interprofessional education materials for students. Working with clinical teams seemed like an important next step – to reach out to providers and learn their challenges and educational needs.

I recently was asked to speak at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing on preparing the nursing workforce for community-based care. Most of my career has been spent in community. In fact, my first job out of college was as a visiting nurse in New York City. I believe in community-based care – so preparing the presentation wasn’t difficult for me.

Getting Started in IPE – 5 Things You Can Do Right Now

 

Sometimes I wonder how we got here.  About a decade ago, there were just a few small IPE conferences and it was common to see the same people at each one. There were a handful of well-known programs that we all wanted to be like when our IPE programs grew up.  And here we are in 2019, with health care leaders, policy makers, accreditors, providers, educators and many others all working to assure that our current and future workforce is prepared for high performance teamwork across professions.
