<p>Is it just us, or did 2024 sneak in and before we knew it, Spring arrived? CAIPER is wrapping up one of the busiest seasons ever, not only for specific projects, but for the center in general.</p>
<p>As we continue to re-imagine team-ness through collaborations, we’re blazing new pathways interprofessional research and education and truly excited to share these initiatives with you soon. </p>
<p>Here's a quick snapshot of what we’ve been up to so far in 2024 and what’s coming next.</p>

<h3><span class="highlight-gold">New Website, New Year</span></h3>
</div>
<p>CAIPER’s website received a complete design overhaul just in time for new training product launches and research releases leading into 2024. The project started in 2023 with the installation of new features including Our Trainings, Learning Solutions Consulting, From the Desk of CAIPER, and our interprofessional Resource Hub. </p>

<h3><span class="highlight-gold">New IPE eLearning Course</span></h3>
</div>
<p>We launched our newest course, <a href="https://ipe.asu.edu/trainings/interprofessional-practice-in-primary-care">Interprofessional Practice in Primary Care</a>, to equip healthcare professionals and students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel as integral members of collaborative teams in primary care settings. The course is an accredited 4-hour eLearning course that strongly emphasizes team-based decision-making and essential skills crucial in both current and evolving primary care practice. </p>

<h3><span class="highlight-gold">CAIPER Interprofessional By Design™ Learning Solutions Consulting</span></h3>

<p>2024 begins the second year for our award-winning Center’s <a href="https://ipe.asu.edu/trainings/learning-solutions-consulting">Learning Solutions Consulting</a> - where we work directly with you and your team to organize, structure, and then integrate essential interprofessional education programs for student learning, faculty training and professional development.</p>

<h3><span class="highlight-gold">2024 National Academies of Practice (NAP) Annual Meeting & Forum</span></h3>
</div>
<p>A proud sponsor of the <a href="https://www.napractice.org/">2024 NAP Meeting & Forum</a> for the second year in a row, team members traveled to Jacksonville, Florida, for this year’s event. In 2023, the CAIPER Team received the <a href="https://ipe.asu.edu/blog/news-events/caiper-receives-national-academies-practice-award-advancing-elearning-healthcare"><em>National Academies of Practice Creativity in Practice and Education Award</em></a> only months after accepting the Nexus Summit <em>George E. Thibault, MD Nexus Award</em> – the highest honor awarded by the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. We look forward to joining our friends in 2025 when the <a href="https://www.napractice.org/annual-meeting-forum">NAP Annual Meeting & Forum returns to Washington, D.C.</a>!</p>

Our goal was to learn content and delivery preferences firsthand from primary care teams and co-create a training prototype to meet their needs. In interviews and focus groups, members of primary care teams identified learning priorities in the areas of patient engagement, teamwork and team wellbeing. Their preferred format was short, engaging, and immediately actionable. <p><em>Project overview: Health systems are faced with a dual challenge of “optimizing learning and patient care”, while preparing health professions learners for interprofessional, integrated team-based care and collaboration (NCICLE, 2019, p. 4). <p>Dr. Michalec joins CAIPER and Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation from the University of Delaware, where he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Associate Dean of Interdisciplinary Initiatives & Interprofessional Education within the College of Health Sciences.</p>
<p>Dr. Michalec will build on CAIPER's nationally recognized work and expand impact and reach through new initiatives and research.</p>

<p>Arizona State University and Dignity Health are collaborating on a new 18-month interprofessional primary care education project funded by a $525,000 grant from the <a href="https://asunow.asu.edu/20181019-solutions-asu-professors-tackle-large-scale-public-health-challenges-partnership-dignity">ASU – Dignity Health Collaborative Strategic Initiatives Program</a>.</p>
<p>The project will bring together clinicians, students, faculty, patients and caregivers to design and launch the interprofessional primary care clinical learning environment of the future.</p>
<p>CAIPER's Founding Director, <strong>Dr. Gerri Lamb</strong>, and Chief Medical Officer at Dignity Health Arizona, <strong>Dr. Keith Frey</strong>, are co-principal investigators on the project along with collaborators from ASU’s Center for Advancing Interprofessional Practice, Education and Research (CAIPER), ASU’s Center for Innovation in Healthy and Resilient Aging (CIHRA) and ASU’s College of Health Solutions.</p>

<p>Released in September 2020 from the <em>Annals of Internal Medicine </em>(<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impact_factor">Impact Factor</a>: 21.32) CAIPER Center Director and Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Faculty Scholar, <strong>Barret Michalec</strong>, PhD, along with <strong>Ian Sampson</strong>, MFA, and <strong>Frederic W. Hafferty</strong>, PhD, are the authors of one of the only research articles presented entirely in the form of comics. </p>
<p><em>Humanism in the Premedical Realm: An Exercise in Graphic Medicine, </em>uses the students' voice and perspective to examine the opportunities for humanism on the premed path.<em> </em></p>
<p>While graphic medicine, stemming from the adaptation of the graphic novel, has been used for the exploration of healthcare topics, at the time of its publication, <em>Humanism in the Premedical Realm: An Exercise in Graphic Medicine </em>is one of the first research articles in this form.</p>
<p>Research articles can range from a few pages to multiple sections and can sometimes take hours to read. The use of the comics format not only cuts time for the reader – in this article the reading time is about 10 minutes – it also keeps the reader engaged through short text and illustrations. </p>
<p>The article<em>, </em>published in <em>Annals of Internal Medicine</em>, was made possible by partnerships with the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. </p>
<p><a href="https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/full/10.7326/G19-0085"><em>Humanism in the Premedical Realm: An Exercise in Graphic Medicine </em></a>is publicly available now.</p>

<p>On February 9, 2021, CAIPER'S Director, Dr. Barret Michalec, joined Edson College's <a href="https://mindfulnesscenter.asu.edu/">Center for Mindfulness, Compassion and Resilience</a> for their Midday Mindfulness series hosted by Dr. Teri Pipe, ASU Chief Well-being Officer, and Dr. Nika Gueci, Executive Director for University Engagement.</p>
<p>In the episode, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61dsARQXuGE&feature=youtu.be"><em>Advancing the Humility Paradigm</em></a>, Dr. Michalec discusses how his work in empathy led him to explore the concept of humility and provides background on humility including how it relates to mindfulness. He outlines connections within health professions education and care delivery and shares everyday practices for faculty and students to "exercise" their humility muscles.</p>

<p>Through his Fellowship, Dr. Barret Michalec will develop an experiential-learning program for undergraduate health profession students. The program will be primarily pre-med and nursing students, but open to other health pre-professionals as well. It will connect clinical experiences to explore and to have engagement with specific elements of the arts and humanities. </p>
<p>The Harvard Macy Institute Art Museum-based Health Professions Education Fellowship engages selected scholars in a variety of pedagogical methods used in art museum-based education including Visual Thinking Strategies, the Personal Responses Tour, Thinking Routines as well as explorations of other art forms, metaphor, and mindful practice.</p>
<p>The goals of the proposed program are to emphasize the interconnectedness, shared values, and shared vulnerabilities of health professionals, at an early stage of professional identity formation.</p>

<p>In his latest publication in the Journal of Interprofessional Care, "Extending the table: engaging social science in the interprofessional realm," CAIPER Director & Macy Foundation Scholar, Dr. Barret Michalec, seeks to expose what we may take for granted when it comes to social science with, "An overarching goal of Social Science is to make the familiar strange."</p>
<p>The Journal of Interprofessional Care (JIC) disseminates research and new developments in the scientific field of interprofessional studies in health and social care, encompassing interprofessional education (IPE), and collaborative practice. From its inception, the Journal has maintained a social mission to promote collaboration in education, practice, and research worldwide, and a responsibility to fostering interprofessional developments across established and emerging regions.</p>
